Roberto DIPIAZZA nasce ad Aiello del Friuli(Ud), il 1° febbraio 1953. La sua attività professionale inizia in qualità di dirigente nella grande distribuzione, in seguito crea una propria catena di esercizi commerciali operanti nella provincia di Trieste.

Nel 1996 l’esordio politico- elettorale: si candida  a sindaco di Muggia e vince a capo di una coalizione di centro-destra.  Nei cinque anni del mandato la cittadina  rivierasca cambia volto: la ristrutturazione del centro storico, il rilancio turistico, l’apertura di Porto San Rocco, una “marina” considerata tra le più importanti dell’alto Adriatico, realizzata con il supporto di imprenditori.di calibro internazionale. Nel quadro di migliori relazioni transfrontaliere intraprende con i vicini comuni sloveni significative operazioni  legate alla gestione di pubblici servizi.

Nel 2000 viene insignito del titolo di Commendatore della Repubblica dall’allora Presidente Carlo Azeglio Ciampi.
Nel 2001 diviene, sempre riferimento dello schieramento di centro-destra, Sindaco di Trieste.
Un nuovo ruolo per Trieste nell’ambito dell’ampliamento a Est della UE, lo sviluppo dei traffici portuali e la contestuale riconversione di Porto vecchio sono il  perno programmatico dell’azione politico-amministrativa. Consapevole della rilevante presenza a Trieste di centri scientifici di eccellenza, Dipiazza si impegna per rafforzare il rapporto tra città e ricerca.
Durante il mandato avviene la fusione tra Acegas e la padovana Aps, che dà vita alla più grande multiutility del Nordest quotata in Borsa.
Nel 2004 progetta e gestisce le celebrazioni in occasione del Cinquantenario del ritorno  di Trieste all’Italia.
Specifiche graduatorie di “ Sole 24 ore “ classificano Trieste al primo posto in Italia per vivibilità urbana e qualità  dei servizi .
In ambito sportivo Dipiazza  diviene  presidente della Pallacanestro Trieste 2004.
Nel 2004 la nomina a Grande Ufficiale da parte del Presidente della Repubblica Carlo Azeglio Ciampi.
Nel 2006 la rielezione a Sindaco del capoluogo giuliano. Dipiazza  rivince insistendo sul progetto di Trieste “capitale” d’area adriatica, grande centro terziario-logistico che sulle attività portuali e commerciali, antiche e solide vocazioni territoriali, fonda il rilancio economico. Rilancio corroborato dalle crescenti dimensioni delle iniziative  legate alla ricerca scientifica e dalla volontà di rendere Trieste polo turistico di qualità per i flussi di visitatori nazionali e europei centro-orientali. A tale riguardo il forte impulso alle linee  croceristiche e la recente inaugurazione dell’ex Pescheria, riconvertita a grande galleria d’arte moderna e contemporanea, appaiono passi di particolare rilevanza.
L’obiettivo di ridurre l’incidenza dell’Ici rappresenta per Dipiazza una ineludibile  priorità programmatica, che implica un rigoroso e virtuoso intervento sulle politiche di spesa, senza che il funzionamento della macchina amministrativa  e i   servizi ne abbiano nocumento.                   .
In qualità di Sindaco di Trieste presiede il Teatro lirico comunale Giuseppe Verdi

Roberto Dipiazza was born in Aiello del Friuli (Ud) on 1st February, 1953.
His working career started as a large scale retail manager before setting up his own business enterprise in Trieste’s province.
His political debut happened in 1996 when he was elected mayor of  Muggia as the leader of  a centre-right coalition. His five-year mandate saw this coastal town changing its aspect: the old town was renovated, tourism revived  thanks mainly to the  new  “Porto S. Rocco”, considered one of the most highly rated yacht clubs in the northern Adriatic,  built with international entrepreneurs’ support.
His goal of improving cross border relations between Italy and Slovenia was successful thanks to the setting up of new business relations between Italian and Slovene multi-utility (gas, water, electricity) companies.
In 2000 he was named “commendatore” (an official title awarded for services given to the Republic of Italy) by the former President Carlo Azeglio Ciampi.
In 2001 he was elected mayor of Trieste with the support of a centre right coalition. His political program focused on a new role for the city of Trieste linked to the eastern expansion of the Eu, the trade development of the port and the reorganization of the so called  “porto vecchio”.
Mr Dipiazza also committed himself to strengthen the links between the city and its international institutes of advanced studies and applied research.

During his mandate the merger between “Acegas” (Trieste) and “Aps” (Padua) created the biggest multi-utility listed in the stock exchange in the north east of Italy.
In 2004 the celebration of the fiftieth anniversary of the Trieste’s joining  Italy again (after nearly of a decade of British / American administration) was coordinated by the mayor and his staff.
The Italian financial newspaper “Sole 24 ore” rated Trieste as the best city in Italy for urban quality of life and services.
Mr Dipiazza also supported sports activities and became president of the second division basketball team “Pallacanestro Trieste 2004”.
The same year saw him named  “grande ufficiale” (another official title awarded for services given to the Republic of Italy) by the former President of the Republic Carlo Azeglio Ciampi.
In 2006 he was elected, for a second term, mayor of Trieste.
Mr Dipiazza won his second mandate sharing the vision of a city becoming the “capital” of  the Adriatic region: a city able to offer qualified services and founding its economical revival on trading and on increased port activities, its age-old tradition.
This “renaissance” has been increasingly fuelled by new initiatives in scientific research and by the policy of making Trieste an exclusive centre for tourists. Both from Italy and from central eastern Europe countries. The increase of holiday cruisers calling in Trieste and the newly reconversion of the old fish market building  into an important contemporary art gallery represents an important step in this direction. The goal to reduce the “ICI” (a local tax on real estate) is a Dipiazza’s priority which implies a strict intervention on public expenses without touching the running of the minicipality’s administrative structure and services.
As mayor of Trieste Mr Dipiazza is also in charge as president of the city lyric theatre “G. Verdi”.
